John Craven Opens Grow-Your-Own Scheme at Zoo
Paignton Zoo Environmental Park will have its very own grow-your-own project implemented by BBC Countryfile presenter John Craven.
The former Newsround presenter will join guests for today's opening of the VertiCrop sustainable hydroponics installation.
The VertiCrop project will mean that the zoo can grow a year-round supply of herbs, fruit and vegetables to meet its animals' appetites.
This installation is the first of its kind in Europe and Paignton is the first zoo in the world to have one.
The zoo's collaboration with Launceston-based Valcent Products, the developers of VertiCrop, is at the forefront of global efforts to find new ways of growing plants due to rapidly depleting resources.
