JK Rowling releases cover art for first adult novel ‘The Casual Vacancy’
It’s been 15 years since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first went flying off the bookshelves faster than a seeker who’s spotted the golden snitch. Now, 7 books and a multi-million pound film franchise later — not to mention all the rights to any spin-off material — plus even various theme parks and attractions such as Warner Bros Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter, JK Rowling has branched away from the wizarding world to join us muggles.
Harry Potter has sold well over 450 million copies worldwide and been translated into 67 different languages making it one of, if not the bestselling book series in history. Not surprisingly, with figures like these Rowling famously was the first female author to become a billionaire through the sales of her books alone. But like the majority of her audience, she too has grown up and moved from the Ministry of Magic to the realm of the good old English Countryside.
Like a vault at Gringotts, Rowling’s next venture The Casual Vacancy is a highly guarded secret and very little is known about what the story will entail. Critics have speculated a dark tale of comedy, and without a wand or horcrux in sight. What we do know is that the focus surrounds the death of parish councillor Barry Fairweather, and how looks can be deceiving when all-out war erupts amongst the inhabitants of the idyllic village of Pagford.
On July 3, 2012 publisher Little, Brown Book Group released the cover art for the book, although it still gives very little away. What can be sure is that old and new Potter fans will be holding their breath for this highly anticipated novel, and whether it will make the same impact as her previous work, since it has a lot to live up to.
In the meantime, for those of you who just can’t stand to put your robes away or the Sorting Hat keeps insisting that you join the rest of your classmates in the Gryffindor common room, then fear not! Hop on the actual Knight Bus and head to the Warner Bros Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter this summer to relive the magical experience all over again. With real sets, costumes and props, even the chance to ride around Hogwarts aboard your very own broom!
The Casual Vacancy (Hardback) will be released on September 27, 2012 and pre-orders can be made from all good stockists now.
